Burnet girls basketball meets defensive goals in beating Hutto

The Burnet High School girls basketball team defeated Hutto 44-36 Nov. 26 in the Lady Dawgs’ first game back after the Thanksgiving holiday.
“It was a little bit of a high-scoring game,” Lady Dawgs head coach Rick Gates said. “We did a wonderful job defensively. We’re trying to get stops right now. We’re playing with different presses depending on who we have on the floor.”
The Lady Hippos led 7-2 early in the contest before the Lady Dawgs (3-4) went on a 5-0 run to tie the game.
From there, it was all Burnet as the Lady Dawgs outscored Hutto 18-2 until about a minute remained in the half. The Lady Dawgs led 25-12 at the break.
Hutto began to chip away at the deficit and trailed 28-21 midway through the third period though Burnet led 36-26 in the fourth quarter en route to victory.
By keeping the Lady Hippos to 36 points, the Lady Dawgs met one of their goals for each game.
“We talk about keeping a team to 40 or under, keeping a team to under 10 a quarter,” Gates said. “We did that in the first half. If we can do that (in a game), we feel like we have a good chance to win.”
The coach said the Lady Dawgs are mixing up their defenses, especially their presses in order to find the one that works best for the team and to confuse the opponent. The ability to mix it up defensively to keep the opposition guessing is an advantage to Burnet.
“If we find a particular press we excel in, that would be great,” he said. “You’d like to be able to attack opponents with the press in different ways, so they can’t continue to break one press over and over.”
Hutto had 23 rebounds, 12 assists, 6 steals and 2 blocks. Burnet had 43 rebounds, 13 assists, 7 steals and 2 blocks.
Burnet senior post Zaria Solis led with 18 points.
“She’s a really good finisher around the basket,” Gates said. “Anytime we can get her the ball around the basket, that’s good.”
Senior guard MaeSyn Gay added 10 points.
“It’s good to see her pick up her scoring,” the coach said. “Others are chipping in. (Junior forward) Sierra Schaefer, our point guard Sydney Lough are capable of scoring; that potential is there to put points on the board.”
Burnet will compete in the Little River Academy Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 30-Dec. 2. The Lady Dawgs face Milano at 1 p.m. and Mumford at 7 p.m., both on Thursday followed by Rogers at 1 p.m. Friday to conclude pool play.
